Kangerlussuaq means ”the big fiord”. This town with one of the two approaches to Greenland, Kangerlussuaq Airport, is situated at the head of the 175 kilometers long fiord, that cuts into the west coast. It has approximately 500 inhabitants, and by the airport you find the famous roadsign, which shows the flight time to capitols around the world. Kangerlussuaq is on a level with the Arctic Circle and only 30 kilometers from The Inland Ice.
During the German occupation form 1940 to 1945 Denmark could no longer attend to the security of Greenland, and the responsibility was turned over to the Americans. Of the many military bases The United States subsequently founded, Kangerlussuaq was one of the more important. Today the town and airbase are under The Greenlandic Home Government, but the area still bears witness of it’s times as an old, American airbase.
Kangerlussuaq has a very settled climate with warm and dry summers and very cold winters.
